### Responsibilities
Maintains responsibility for all phases of treatment prior to discharge of treatment water.
Provides a full range of treatment, including those required for meeting Department of Environmental Protections (DEP) National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems permit conditions (NPDES).
Removes nitrogen, phenol, ammonia, phosphorous, chemicals and oils from Industrial Wastewater.
Operates and maintains digester for sludge removal.
Operates comminutor, barminutor, screener, grit removal system, valves, pumps, collector systems, and primary settling tanks to move sewage and sludge through the pretreatment and primary treatment stages.

### Qualifications
To qualify for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, your resume and supporting documentation must support:
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and that you have the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Effort: Work requires prolonged standing, walking, and climbing up and down stairs and ladders. Occasionally opens and closes heavy valves, lifts heavy equipment and tools, and works in awkward positions requiring moderate to heavy physical exertion.
Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside in various weather conditions. Exposed to infectious diseases from sewage and other hazards from gases and fumes such as methane, chlorine, and carbon monoxide which require the use of safety equipment such as gas masks or respirators. Possibility of falls into open tanks, manholes, etc. resulting in cuts, bruises, and broken bones. Working conditions are a normal part of the job and are considered in the evaluation.
